Over the last four weeks, Grand Designs have showcased the projects on the RIBA House of the Year longlist, revealing at the end of the episode the two houses to progress to the shortlist. Berkshire House is one of the last four projects to be featured and tonight’s episode will reveal not only if it has made the shortlist but the overall RIBA House of the Year winner as well.
The project involved the construction of a new, steel framed, modern house. The building is supported on a new piled raft slab above external ground level to provide minimal disruption to the underlying protected tree roots.
The structural steel frame is dictated by large clear spans cantilevered first floor and balcony areas as well as a 6m high feature rear double door. The house also features metal deck concrete slabs within for acoustic reasons.
The project has previously won a RIBA South Award.
