HTS in Venice

This year’s HTS summer trip took us to the beautiful city of Venice.

We started the first day with an insightful tour of the historic Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. Our tour guide, engineer Giacomo Gianetti, took us to the top of the Frari’s Bell Tower which at over 70m provided fantastic views of the city. This was followed by a site visit to Palazzo Tiepolo, a private residence built on the Grand Canal, where Giacomo explained the processes and challenges that arise when building on Venetian canals.

In the afternoon, HTS made our way to the Venice Biennale at the Giardini and were thoroughly impressed by the pavilions on display. Switzerland’s Golden Lion winning pavilion proved popular as did Caruso St John’s British Pavilion – Island and the treetop roof terrace, both created to respond to the theme of Freespace. HTS finished the first evening with a fantastic dinner on the island of Murano.

The next day we had guided tours of the Biennale at the Arsenale by local architects before heading to a canal side lunch spot in the heart of Venice.

Venice with its combination of historic UNESCO World Heritage Sites and fascinating Biennale, made it a perfect location for the HTS summer trip 2018.
