HTS+ Engineered Timber Testing

Over the past 18 months HTS, in collaboration with City University London, have been researching the use of mechanical fixings to develop composite action between CLT floor panels and glulam beam elements. The aim of this research has been to achieve a structurally efficient solution utilising both engineered timber products in combination, thus driving down overall structural depths.

The testing regime consisted of a series of small scale ‘push-out’ tests, used to compare various types and arrangements of mechanical fixings (i.e. screws, toothed plates etc.), which helped inform the fixing proposals for larger full-scale T-beam tests.

Last week, HTS and City University London completed the second full-scale test which ended in an exciting failure. Although the results are still to be fully analysed, there is real promise for achieving our project aim.

HTS have undertaken extensive research of engineered timber, growing our knowledge in the process as we apply the theory to real-world situations before moving towards physical testing at the University’s research laboratories.

Kelly Harrison will be speaking at the Solid Wood Solutions 2018 Conference in July where she will be sharing some of the research results as well as discussing a few of the recent HTS timber projects.
