We’re delighted to announce that The Import Building has won a Structural Timber Award for ‘Commercial Project of the Year’.
HTS provided the structural design for an exposed timber structure within the nine storey atrium of the existing RC framed office building, along with the creation of a large side extension and new retail units.
The use of timber for the atrium structure is more than an aesthetic choice; it is much lighter than an equivalent in steel or concrete, vital in an existing building, where foundation strengthening would have been cost-prohibitive. Timber also aided the efficient delivery of the project on time and on budget, due to off-site manufacture and rapid construction programme.
The project is an excellent example of how the use of timber in commercial developments can provide an efficient, economical solution to an otherwise challenging brief without compromising design quality.
HTS are now working on the sister building opposite, soon to be known as The Export Building, where a new glulam and CLT framed side extension is currently being built. HTS also engineered the surrounding gardens and public realm.
