The World’s Largest Girder

Constructed in 1931, the Cumberland Hotel originally housed the largest girder in the world! At 68 ft long and weighing almost 100 tonnes, the girder was transported from Middlesbrough to London, on the world’s largest lorry, where it was painstakingly brought into position as part of the fifteen thousand tonnes of steel-work used in the hotel's construction.

The girder is still an integral part of the building’s structure, and HTS are currently on site undertaking a complex refurbishment of the ground floor and three basement levels to provide contemporary retail space in this Grade II listed building. The enormous 1930’s transfer beam is still being put to good use and supporting the addition of new mezzanine levels as part of the refurbishment works.
