Walworth Town Hall gains planning approval

Our Walworth Town Hall project designed with Feix and Merlin has been granted planning approval by Southwark Council.

Originally constructed in 1894, the Grade II listed town hall building will undergo a series of sensitive refurbishments to create a vibrant community and co-working hub in the heart of Southwark.

Following a fire in 2013, the existing building was severely damaged, with significant repair works needed to restore the building’s council chamber and viewing gallery. Using a lightweight, low-carbon glulam and CLT structure, the previously vacant chamber space will be rebuilt and transformed into a contemporary co-working space. A number of other structural upgrades and repairs are proposed across the site to bring the historic building back into public use.

Commenting on the scheme, Historic England welcomed the ‘conserve-as-found approach to the restoration’, allowing the scheme to be removed from their heritage at risk list.
