Tom Watson

Director

MEng (Hons) CEng MIStructE

University of Southampton

Tom is a Director at HTS and leads a team working on a large variety of projects and sectors. He enjoys the technical aspects of the job and is heavily involved in all of his projects. He takes great pleasure in finding the optimum detail that is both elegant and practical, and the thrill of seeing our designs being built on site. He has significant experience in building over and around buried infrastructure and has recently gained more experience in designing with engineered timber for various commercial projects.Tom has over 12 years’ experience in structural engineering and has worked on projects ranging from large mixed-use developments and complicated refurbishments to bespoke farm houses.

At Battersea Arts Centre he was responsible for stabilising a fire-damaged Victorian structure and designing the new roof extension, incorporating sliding bearings to avoid overloading the existing masonry. At 1 Station Square in Tottenham Hale, his team devised an innovative hybrid structure using cantilevering walls and a piled  raft to support a 22 storey building over the Victoria Line tunnels. Tom’s current projects include a 50,000sqm office development in Southwark for Landsec, using a hybrid timber and steel structure to minimise embodied carbon.

Tom began his career at AECOM after completing an architecturally-focused engineering degree at the University of Southampton in 2008. He joined Heyne Tillett Steel in 2011 and was made a Director in 2018
