42-46 Princelet Street involves the redevelopment of an existing office building near Brick Lane. The building was originally constructed in the mid-1800s and it was used as a textile warehouse. There will be 2 additional floors constructed and a larger atrium driven through the centre for circulation and more exposure to natural light. A feature cantilever staircase will be installed in the atrium.
Carefully considered structural testing has been carried out to justify the existing cast iron columns and the foundations to carry the load of the additional floors with minimal strengthening required. The two new storeys are proposed to be constructed as steel frames with timber infill floors. Two lightweight pitched vierendeel trusses spanning the full width of the building provide a column free top floor with glazing incorporated between the top and bottom cords of the trusses to provide light into the office space.
