HTS, in collaboration with Haworth Tompkins and Battersea Arts Centre, has been granted planning permission for the reconstruction and refurbishment of the Grade II* listed Grand Hall at Battersea Arts Centre by Wandsworth Borough Council, following a severe fire on 13th March 2015. Internally, the elements of the Grand Hall that have survived the fire will be retained and refurbished or stabilised; a new timber lattice ceiling, demountable side galleries and a technical gallery at high level are proposed to replace lost elements.
HTS have been involved in the refurbishment works in a separate part of the building since 2012. After the fire we quickly developed a temporary steel restraint structure to stabilise the main gable walls of the Grand Hall, working closely with a contractor specialising in dangerous sites.
The design of the new roof truss structures have been developed to accommodate a much larger arrangement of theatre tech equipment and access.
