The project involves redeveloping a commercial site into a new hall of residence, accommodating 200 student units and 25 social housing units. The new student block will be arranged over seven floors including a basement level. This will be framed in reinforced concrete, with flat slab floors. The design features exposed double-height columns supporting external terraces and green roofs with a saw tooth façade along the main road. The social housing block consists of an engineered timber frame. This will speed up construction and help to overcome the difficult logistics in this area of the site adjacent to the elevated Network Rail tracks. The close proximity of the railway led to careful consideration of the subterranean basement, resulting in a contiguous piled wall and top down construction to maintain stability of the embankment.
