1206 - Monmouth House

London

The project is a new-build commercial development on the city fringe, situated adjacent to the Grade I listed Bunhill Fields cemetery and is bounded on its northern side by City Road. The ground floor will provide retail space and a café, whilst the upper floors are a mix of office accommodation and space for tech start-ups drawn to the Old street area.

The structure will comprise of 2 elements, one of 10 storeys and another of 6. The building is RC framed and the exposed flat slabs will incorporate cooling pipes to make use of its large thermal mass. A single storey basement will be constructed over the whole site using contiguous piled walls. These will be installed from the existing basement level whilst the existing basement walls are propped. Northern line and Network Rail tunnels are located a short distance from the site beneath City Road. Cantilevering pile caps are needed to set back the piles and avoid imposing any load onto the tunnels.
