New retail fit-out over two floors within a recently constructed building. The space achieved BREEAM ‘excellent’, unusual for a retail unit. Max Fordham used the thermal mass of a dry stone wall to help modulate the environment, and containing voids through fresh air is passed. The support of the wall was key, with new spreader beams installed under and existing steel connections strengthened. The wall itself had a supporting timber sub-frame.
